Mom arrested after giving “shots” of beer to 4-year-old son

In yet another case of is-this-for-real parenting, a South Carolina woman was arrested after openly giving her four-year-old son "shots" of beer at a bar on Saturday night.

Gretchen Lynn Kinnear, 44, was at an Irish pub in Forthill when a bar patron saw her giving her son approximately three shots of beer and asked a manager and waitress from the pub to interfere. When questioned by police, Kinnear admitted to giving her toddler a sample from her drink, which she told him was "tea." Apparently later, her son told officers that he thought the tea "tasted funny" and that it made him dizzy! Oh my god, that poor little boy! But the story gets even worse…

The boy also told authorities that his mom gave him similar "tea" at home, prompting Kinnear to confess that she allows her son to have some wine at least 1 to 2 times a week.  Are you kidding?! What kind of person practically forces alcohol down their kid's throat multiple times a week for no apparent reason? It doesn't seem like anyone was stopping from drinking herself so why in the world did she have to make her son have it too? And why would she ever bring him to a bar on a Saturday night in the first place?

The entire incident is completely beyond my comprehension. At least, her son is now safe since child welfare workers took custody of the boy at the pub and placed him in the care of a couple who babysits the child. Meanwhile, Kinnear was arrested (she has since been released on bail) and is now facing child negligence charges.

I'm just glad that Kinnear will be punished and hope that for his sake, her son is kept with more capable guardians. After all, who knows what else she has given to the innocent kid that she hasn't admitted?
