Kim Kardashian gives this gift to her 4 kids every birthday & the cost might surprise you

What does a celebrity who has it all give to their children for their birthdays? For Kim Kardashian, the go-to gift might surprise you. Although she's literally a billionaire who can afford anything her kids' hearts desire, the Skims mogul instead opts for a more modest yet meaningful present: handwritten letters. And we actually kind of love this idea.

As fans and Instagram followers know all too well, Kim shares four children with her ex-husband, Kanye West, who legally changed his name to Ye. Their oldest, North West, was born in June 2013; Saint West came in December 2015; Chicago West was born in January 2018 via surrogate; and Psalm West was welcomed in May 2019 via surrogate as well. Let's take a closer look at Kim's birthday gift of choice and why she decided to start the thoughtful tradition.

Kim opened up about what she gives her kids for their birthdays every year.

In May 2023, Kim made an appearance on the On Purpose with Jay Shetty podcast to talk about happiness, fame, parenting, and more. Their sit-down also touched upon Kim's annual tradition involving her children.

"Every year, I write each one of my kids about a four- or five-page letter on their birthday about what the year was like," she explained. "Who their friends are, silly words they’re saying, their favorite foods, all the silly things they do and a little journey of what the year is like.”

She elaborated on why she keeps the birthday tradition going.

Kim explained her reasoning behind writing the birthday letters to her kiddos. “It’s so fun to see from the first year now,” she told Jay of the meaningful tradition. “One of ’em is almost 10 years old. And I know that they’ll appreciate this.”

Kim's kids still enjoy extravagant birthday parties, for the record.

That's not to say that Kim doesn't go all-out in other ways for her kids' birthdays. She makes sure to throw extravagant themed parties for each one of her children (and we're sure friends and family shower the kiddos with presents on their big day). Earlier in May, Psalm celebrated his fourth birthday with a firefighter-themed bash that included real fire trucks, firefighters, gear, and more. And in January, Chicago enjoyed a Hello Kitty-themed party.

The mom of four commented on what she hopes her kids will understand when they look back on their childhoods.

Kim went even deeper into her thoughts on parenting, sharing what she hopes her children will think looking back on how they were raised. “I know that they’ll appreciate everything, even if they might have thought I was being a little harsh on them,” she explained. “I know that they’ll get it because I got it with my mom. I know they’ll get it with me.”

Kim opened up about the challenges of being a single parent, too.

Although Kim goes out of her way to celebrate, love, and support her children, The Kardashians star has admitted that single parenting isn't always easy. "It has been the most challenging thing," she told Jay. "There are nights I cry myself to sleep. Like, holy s—, this f—ing tornado in my house. Like, what just happened?" Still, Kim also shared that "parenting is the thing that has taught me the most about myself."

Hopefully, she'll keep sharing the realities (good and bad) with her followers for years to come!
