The older I get, the sappier I become and the more I realize how deeply connected we all are, whether we admit it or not. There is a poem by Chicano playwright Luis Valdez that draws heavily from the Mayan philosophy of Lak’ech. Part of the poem reads: “Tú eres mi otro yo. You are my other me.” That philosophy rings true to me and helps me understand how we can so deeply mourn the deaths of people like celebrities whom we have never met. You know what I mean? It’s because we are all connected, and these people gifted us with their talents, and when they die, it feels personal because it is personal, regardless of whether we knew them or not.
More from MamásLatinas: Famous stars we lost in 2021
Sometimes it’s surprising how strongly the death of a celebrity will hit you. Like when I heard that Louie Anderson died on January 22, 2022, I started sobbing immediately. You wouldn’t think that Louie and I would have much in common, but I read his book Hey Mom a few years back, and I was deeply touched by the love he expressed for his mother. Sadly, Louie is joined on the list of celebrities we’ve lost in 2022 so far like Kirstie Alley, Irene Cara, Bob Saget, Sidney Poitier, Ana Bejerano, and Ivana Trump. Let’s take a moment to appreciate these celebrities for their contributions, and may their passing remind us, in the words of Luis Valdez:
In Lak’ech
Tú eres mi otro yo.
You are my other me.
Si te hago daño a ti,
If I do harm to you,
Me hago daño a mi mismo.
I do harm to myself.
Si te amo y respeto,
If I love and respect you,
Me amo y respeto yo.
I love and respect myself.
