10 Lessons we learned from our abuelitas

Abuelitas are wise, honest (sometimes too honest), and full of advice for just about any situation:

1. To always follow your passions regardless of what anybody says… even when "anybody" really means your own parents. (Yes, abuelitas go there: ¡Ay, no le hagas caso a tu mamá ella no sabe de estas cosas!) And then you're all like, "Really abuela?"

2. Know your priorities. Family over everything. Always. This one is an absolute no-brainer, but our abuelitas just won't get tired of driving the point home. It goes a little bit like this "la familia lo es todo" or "la sangre es la sangre"… which basically means no matter how annoying or crazy your family is… you deal with it! It's family!

3. The way to a person's heart is through the kitchen. It's so true! We told you abuelitas never lie. Just try it! Give someone a pan dulce or make a nice and hot cafecito for them and they'll love you forever (a delicious slice of cake never hurt either!)

4. When you arrive at someone's home or a party, say hi to every single person because if you don't… well, it's rude. Honestly, this one never fails. My grandma always asks "¿Ya saludaste a tu tía?" And sometimes even after I've reassured her that I have, she'll turn to my aunt and ask "¿Ya te saludó?"  Omg, yes! I promise I said hi to everyone!

5. Don't leave the house looking like a mess because you never know whom you're going to meet. Even if you're just going to the gas station, supermarket, nail salon, etc.,abuelita doesn't care she's not into the "sweatpants with no make-up on" look. She's not Drake so don't go out en fachas. This means your clothes are well ironed and you have un "suéter" on so you won't catch "una gripa" (even in 95 degree weather, this is all entirely NOT made up.)

6. Figure it out on your own. I can't count the times I've heard "porque ahora me tienes a mí pero, ¿y si me muero?" Sink or swim… you have to figure things out on your own… even though you know in the back of your mind you can always turn to abuelita for some guidance.

7. Eat all your food porque hay muchos niños con hambre…"But Abuela, I'm stuffed… ¡Cómetelo!

8. Grandma knows best or in abuelita lingo "Más sabe el diablo por viejo que por diablo" and you better listen to this one because if not she'll hit you with the "cuando yo me muera te vas a acordar de mí". One way or another, she's always reminding you to take her advice because if you don't when she dies…that's when it'll really sink in!… to which I always say "Abuela, you're never going to die!"

9. There's always room for one more at the dinner table. Abuela always said "donde comen dos come tres" and when it comes to food the more the merrier. Even if it's just a plate of rice and beans, you share what you have.

10. Face your fears. Do what you're most scared of and get it over with plus you're not alone… you're with Dios.
