I'm sure that if you ask single dad Matt Logelin, he'd have no problem explaining. Back in 2005, he married Liz, his high school sweetheart, and two years later, they found out she was expecting. The pregnancy was a bit rocky with Liz having severe morning sickness and having to be in bed rest for several weeks both at home and at the hospital. Then, on March 24, 2008, Liz gave birth to baby Madeleine seven weeks early via C-section. Liz remained in bed rest for the next 27 hours until she was told she could finally meet her daughter. As she got in the wheelchair that would take her to see Maddy for the first time, she felt lighthearted and passed out. The doctors worked furiously to save her, but Liz died of a pulmonary embolism.
She and Maddy never met.
So while Matt had to mourn the death of his wife, his best friend and high school sweetheart, he couldn't help but rejoice in the fact that he was a dad for the first time. Can you even imagine what that must have been like? I can't.
Without a doubt, the two happiest days of my life were the ones my children were born and I got to hold them for the first time. My husband documented those first moments in photos and videos and I still get all chocked up when I take a look at them. But what if those moments never took place. What if I had died right after giving birth? My husband would've had to plan a homecoming and a funeral. The thought of that is just way too heartbreaking.
For Matt, it's been almost five years since that fateful day. In that time, he's been keeping a blog, has written a book called "Two Kisses for Maddy," and he has vowed to keep his wife's Liz memory alive for his daughter's sake. So far, he seems to be doing a pretty good job.
In the end, as his poignant story goes to show, love always wins.
