TIME’s Person of the Year: President Barack Obama definitely deserves the honor…again (PHOTOS)

I don't think I could possibly be happier to say that reelected President Barack Obama has just been named TIME magazine's Person of the Year.

For the first time ever, I was anxiously waiting for this decision for months. Typically I'm excited to see the Sexiest Man Alive (which, of course, I loved) but, more than ever, I was really hoping that the POTUS would win this prestigious honor from TIME again (he won in 2008 as well). After everything that has gone on this year, I really think he deserves it. To be honest, it's not just all of his many accomplishments and all of the ways he has helped our nation to be better this year, but a BIG reason of why I love President Obama so much is because of his big heart.

Every time I think about the fact that Barack Obama is our nation's president, it makes me really, really proud to be an American. This is especially important to me because I am a naturalized citizen. I wasn't born here and I didn't particularly love our last president (Ok fine, that may quite possibly be the biggest understatement I've ever made). The first year I was able to vote, my candidate didn't win. Four years later, I proudly cast my vote for our current president and, four years after, I voted for President Obama again.

I wouldn't change my vote now, or even much about his presidency so far. I hear people (including my dad) complain about Obama all the time and I couldn't care less. I feel that the President has demonstrated true leadership and done the best he could with the broken country that he inherited on January 20th, 2009. Our economy is recovering and our unemployment rates are at 7.7%, the lowest they have been in years!

More than that, though, I consider President Obama a true champion for the people. Under his presidency, Don't Ask, Don't Tell was repealed, allowing gays to serve freely in the military if they chose. He also has made being a woman MUCH cheaper (thanks to preventative health services for women being covered under Obamacare) and is currently championing gay marriage. For a proud feminist with a dozen gay friends, what else is there?

I honestly can't wait to see what happens in the next four years because I have every confidence that the country he received is going to be wildly different than the country he hands over in 2017. I can only hope that the next leader will hold up to Obama's standard of truly caring for and doing the best for the people of the United States of America.

Congratulations, Mr. President, on being TIME's Person of the Year. It's especially well deserved this year, after your amazing responses to tragedies like Hurricane Sandy and the Sandy Hook massacre, and I think the whole nation should thank you for your great service. You have demonstrated your big heart time and time again, never more on display than when you interract with children. In honor of his selection, check out these 8 adorable pictures of President Obama with cute kids!
