Like any other 5-year-old, my daughter Vanessa loves her long hair. Me? Not so much. It's a pain to brush it in the morning and it's always tangled because it's so thin and so I'm always cutting it short. But knowing how happy it makes her to have it long, I've promised not to cut it for a while. That's why I thought it was amazing that Katie Tindall, a little girl in Texas, l__et her hair grow for a year so she could donate it to an organization that makes wigs for little kids__ who lose their hair to cancer or for any other reason. Katie was inspired to sacrifice her own head of hair when she found out her classmate had lost hers due to cancer.
I swear, it never ceases to amaze me how giving and selfless children can be, especially when it's something they do on their own.

This is what happened in the Texas case: Katie realized that something was wrong with her friend Emily Peña when she started wearing a cap to class. After asking a few questions, Katie realized that Emily has lost her hair because of the chemo treatments she'd been getting to fight cancer.
Katie's mom says Emily's ordeal impacted her daughter so that she decided to let her hair grow for a whole year so she could donate it to Wigs for Kids. I know Katie is not the first child to do this, but I still think it's incredibly generous and loving on her part. I mean, sounds to me like the ultimate sacrifice a little girl can make–considering how much women in general value their hair and how tied it is to our self-image and self-esteem. I wonder if my daughter would be capable of doing the same thing Katie did…
Do you think your daughter could do it?
