4 Tips that will help your family avoid the deadly flu sweeping the nation

I don't want to scare anyone, but the flu is a REAL problem this year. I mean, it's an issue every year but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting that it's widespread in 47 states as of last week and the flu has already killed 21 children this season. Yikes! That's enough to make any mami scared and wonder: what can I do to protect my family from the flu? Well, that's why we're bringing you these 4 tips on how to avoid the deadly flu that's currently sweeping the nation!

1. Get the flu shot: The truth of the matter is that nobody likes needles (I don't think) and the CDC reports that this year's flu vaccine appears to only be about 62% effective. Okay, so, maybe that's not perfect but I am still very much a fan of the "better safe than sorry" method. The CDC especially recommends the yearly flu vaccine for all children 6 months and older.

2. Don't take antibiotics: Here's the thing, mamis. Antibiotics are made to fight bacteria, whereas the flu (and colds, too!) are actually caused by viruses. Taking antibiotics may actually be the WORST thing you can do, since they can also kill off the "good" bacteria that is trying to help you fight that viral flu.

3. Get yourself to the doctor: When you start to feel seasonal flu symptoms (which includes fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue, and even vomiting or diarrhea, which is more common in children), get yourself to the doctor for some antiviral drugs. Although they can't cure your flu, they CAN reduce the length and make you less contagious.

4. Know how it spreads: Experts think that the main way that the flu virus spreads is by droplets when people with the flu cough, sneeze or talk. If you know someone who is sick, then be VERY careful. Make sure they are covering themselves up. You should also make sure that you, and anyone you've come into contact that is sick, is washing their hands with soap and water OFTEN.
