Healthy cocoa banana smoothie perfect for hectic mornings

Weekday mornings at mi casa are hectic to say the least. I have two young kids to drop off at two different schools in the early morning and none of us are morning people. I let them sleep in as long as possible and have everything set up to go before they get up. I have a few go-to kid-friendly breakfast options that work well for us and I'm always looking for others to add to the rotation. Our newest addition is a cocoa banana smoothie that is easy to make and tastes like chocolate heaven to the kids.

I find that smoothies are a great breakfast option for kids because sometimes even though you can't get them to eat anything right when they wake up, you can get them to drink something especially if it's chocolate flavor.

Cocoa Banana Smoothie

Ingredients:

1 cup almond milk
1 very ripe banana*
1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powdered
1 handful of ice cubes (optional)
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon to give a Mexican chocolate flavor (optional)

Directions:

Put all of the ingredients in a blender and blend 'em up until smooth, hence the term smoothie!

This smoothie has a wonderfully chocolaty flavor without the sugar because you are using unsweetened cocoa powder. The almond milk gives it a protein boost and if you would like to make the smoothie even more substantial, you can add vanilla yogurt to it. I'd say decrease the almond milk to about 3/4 cup and add 6 ounces of vanilla yogurt.

*The very ripe banana is what sweetens the smoothie. If you find that your banana is not super ripe, you could always add about 1/2 a teaspoon of vanilla extract to flavor and sweeten.
