Heavy Cream
If a recipe calls for heavy cream, but you don't want to pile up the calories, you can replace it with cottage cheese. They both have the same amount of calcium and similar consistency so you'll be able to enjoy your cream sauces with half of the calories.
Kale
Kale is delicious and it has become very popular these days, the only problem with that is that runs out quickly from the produce aisle. If your recipe requires kale but it's sold out, buy spinach instead. The flavor is different, but you can enjoy the same minerals and proteins of kale.
Anchovies
These super salty little fishes are rich in omega-3 and fatty acids. As you know those two things are great for the body. I know anchovies are an acquired taste, but I personally love them. If a recipe calls for anchovies replace them with sardines in oil so you can enjoy a very similar taste.
Flaxseed
It's hard to find and are a bit pricey, but it's so good for you. It's rich in proteins, omegas, fatty acids and also has anti-inflammatory properties. If flaxseed is not available buy walnuts. Just make sure you grind them so you can enjoy them in your salad or cereal.
Acai
These berries are a phenomenon and rightly so. They are part of the super foods and they are one of the most powerful antioxidants. Acai is also known for helping clean the blood of toxins and even prevent heart attacks. If they are not handy, you can replace them with blueberries. They almost have the same flavor as Acai and are also good for your health.
Butter
Thankfully, this is one of the easiest ingredients to replace. Vegans have cooked without butter all their lives. You can use applesauce or coconut oil for baking cakes and cupcakes and canola oil for pies. Trust me, your Thanksgiving's guest will never miss the butter in that delicious pecan pie you make.
Ground Meat
If you are going to make a lasagna, tacos or prepare a bolognese sauce, but you ran out of meat or don't want to use it, then Portobello mushroom is your ally. Simply grind the mushrooms and prepare them as if it were meat. If you are missing that meaty flavor you can always cook them in beef broth. Trust me, you won't feel the difference because they both have the same consistency.
