I have a secret, alcohol makes me sleepy. Okay, I'm already sleepy because I'm the mother of a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old, but if you throw alcohol into the mix, I become catatonic.
That doesn't mean I don't sometimes want a drink when I go out to dinner at a friend's home. I normally hadle this by drinking a strong cup of coffee before indulging in any alcohol and it seems to even things out. So, imagine my excitement when I heard that researchers have found a way to turn used coffee grounds into an alcoholic beverage! Could this be the answer to my tired boozy needs?

The process to make this coffee-derived alcohol is not the same as the process for making coffee liqueur like Kahlúa and is more like the process of making whiskey and rum from wheat and molasses.
Researchers were able to produce an alcoholic beverage from fermented used coffee grounds that is 40 percent ethanol. That puts it on par with vodka and tequila.
As for the final results, it smells like coffee and has a "bitter and pungent taste" that could possibly be improved with aging, but it's still totally drinkable. Here's the bummer: it loses almost all of the caffeine in the brewing process. Boo!I have a message for those working on this project.
Dear Researchers,
Please get back to me when you figure out how to keep the caffeine in the coffee alcohol. Until then, I will stick to my trick of drinking a strong cup of coffee before my boozy refreshment. Nice try, though.
