I have to say that I did not grow up using manteles. In fact, I grew up with a kind of bias that tablecloths were sort of old-fashioned and dated. Keep in mind that I grew up in the 80s when glass tables were all the rage, so maybe my mom didn't want to cover up all that transparent glory with fabric or oilcloth.
Slowly, I am coming around to see the charms of a table decorated with a lovely mantel. I've always expected to see tables draped for weddings or outdoor festivities and since becoming a mother I have decorated our own table with a birthday themed disposable table cover that makes me see how much more festive a table can be when it's wearing something pretty.
