Emmy Awards 2024: Best, worst & most confusing red carpet looks

The 2023 Emmy Awards ceremony went down on January 15, 2024 in Los Angeles at the Peacock Theater. The Emmys are always a special event and considered the biggest night in television, but this year was even more special. Why? Well, the Emmys are celebrating their 75th anniversary and the ceremony was delayed for months due to the actors and writers strikes. Perhaps the four-month delay added to the excitement of the evening and encouraged some of the eye-catching red carpet looks on display.

But just because so many of the celebrity fashion choices were eye-catching doesn't mean that some of them weren't eyesores. Fortunately, fashion isn't all that serious and no one's eyes were actually damaged. Phew! Anyway, here are my pics for best, worst, and those somewhere in between celebrities at the 2024 Emmy Awards.

BEST: Selena Gomez in Oscar de la Renta.

This dress has such a wow factor on its own, but with the joyful woman in it who happens to be wearing lipstick in the same lush color as the dress, it's a complete and total WOWIE ZOWIE! Also, has Selena ever looked this happy on the red carpet before? She's having a moment, for sure.

BEST: Ariana DeBose in Brunello Cucinelli.

The Academy Award winner looked so sexy in winter white look. I love how the shimmering jacket draped over her shoulders completed the look. She looked incredible. Absolutely stunning!

BEST: Jenna Ortega in Dior Haute Couture.

She looks like she’s wearing a garden and it works. The cage design of the skirt almost makes her look like a human gazebo and trust me when I tell you I mean that as a huge compliment. So pretty.

BEST: Tyler James Williams in Dolce & Gabbana.

I am such of fan of this man's style. He never shows up looking basic. He's got exquisite taste and can wear the heck out of clothes, as you can see. The bronze metallic color of this suit is spectacular.

BEST: Ayo Edebiri in Louis Vuitton.

If you haven’t watched the The Bear yet, you should! Everyone in it, including the delightful Ayo Edbiri, is so good and so is this dress. The structure of it is exquisite. It looks like a wearable sculpture. Everything about it from the shape, to the fit, to the color, to the material to the pockets is artfully executed.

BEST: Donald Glover in Bode.

Donald Glover knows how to have fun with fashion and I always look forward to seeing what he's going to wear to red carpet events. I love the relaxed fit and floral detailing of his suit, but it's his shoes that I adore the most. They are fantastic!

BEST: Laverne Cox in vintage Thierry Mugler Couture.

How crazy is it that this gown is vintage when it looks so of the moment?! Laverne looks amazing in it and I love the detailing in the cut and fabric. It’s edgy and elegant at the same time and the fabric is dark with tonal dimensionality to it. Very nice.

BEST: Jessica Chastain in Gucci.

What in the vibrant lime green-ness is going on here? How in the world does Jessica Chastain manage to look so good in this beyond bright shade? The way the dress drapes on her body and ends in fringe-y delight is fabulous.

IN BETWEEN: Padma Lakshmi in neon-ish green.

While I liked the in-your-face color of Jessica Chastain’s dress, this almost neon green that Padma wore does not make my heart go pitter patter. Somehow the color works on Padma and she looks incredible, but it’s like the color is competing with the design of the dress and it all ends up being too much.

IN BETWEEN: Aubrey Plaza in Lowe.

OK, so I love the way that Aubrey looks in this dress and I think it’s a fun and playful design that comes off looking like it wasn’t quite done on time, so they just pinned up some extra fabric to create a bodice. I love it when fashion doesn't take itself too seriously, but I’m listing it as “in between” because I can see how some would hate it even though I think it’s the best.

IN BETWEEN: Simona Tabasco in Marni.

The dress the Italian actress wore is so beautiful. It's fun, bright, and looks so pretty on her, but it feels wrong for the setting. I would love it at a garden party, wedding, or at a fancy outdoor event, I don't love it for an evening awards show. Right dress, wrong event.

WORST: Sophie Thatcher in green satin.

The Yellowjackets star wore a dress that I have a hard time believing would look good on anyone. The color and cut are just terrible. The color looks like a bad pea green from the 1970s and the cut of the dress around the neckline looks like it was a much too large dress that was poorly tailored to fit.

WORST: Emma Brooks McAllister in Do Long.

Jay L. Clendenin/Getty

No offense to the social media darling, but I've never really been a fan of dresses designed to artfully convey nudeness and now I feel like they've been done so much that they no longer need to be done.

WORST: Ali Wong in Louis Vuitton.

75th Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals
Neilson Barnard/Getty

I love Ali Wong so much and I am so happy she won an Emmy for her role in Beef, but I definitely have beef with the outfit she wore because it does not deserve her. I understand that it is Louis Vuitton, but it might as well be a LuLaRoe pattern mixing fail. If you know, you know and if you don’t, look it up.

WORST: Lisa Ann Walter in Greta Constantine.

Love the Abbott Elementary actress, love the way her hair is styled, love the top of her dress, cannot understand the reasoning behind the ketchup colored skirt thing. Why? Now, I want fries.

WORST: Abby Elliott in Alexander McQueen.

Even though I think The Bear actress looks great in the color of the gown and for the most part it fits her very well, I find the neckline so confusing. When I look at it, it makes me think that Abby has two sets of boobs. That's too many boobs.

WORST: Alex Borstein in an ornate red and black outfit.

Michael Tullberg/Getty

What in the Moulin Rouge Lady Marmalade is going on here? There's lingerie, an almost finished red dress, and feathers. This looks more like a costume than a red carpet look. There is too much going on.

WORST: Issa Rae in Pamella Roland.

75th Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals
Kevin Mazur/Getty

Well, if you ever needed proof that Issa Rae can look amazing in just about anything, here you have it. She manages to look beautiful in this floor-length shaggy poncho. I don't how she did it, but she did it.

WORST: Riley Keough in Chanel Haute Couture.

75th Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals
Kevin Mazur/Getty

I'm not sure why anyone thought that wearing ugly boxers underneath a sheer gown was a good idea. I'm kidding, I know those aren't boxers, but they might as well be because that's what they look like to me.

WORST: Lauren Ambrose in a floral satin muumuu.

75th Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals
Kevin Mazur/Getty

I have nothing against muumuus and actually think they can be quite chic in certain settings. However, wearing a dress that looks like a muumuu to the Emmys is kind of underwhelming. Lauren is lovely, the dress is wrong for the event in my opinion.
