I've been taking magnesium supplements for close to a year now. It's great for people with stomach or digestion problems (like I have) and helps fight inflammation. But I had no idea this stuff had beauty benefits too. I mean, how often do you hear about magnesium in the beauty world?

Okay, for starters it's not an actual oil. I don't even know why they call it oil because according to board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Dendy Engelman, "It's just magnesium chloride that's suspended in water." The texture and consistency just seems oily. But before I get down to the beauty benefits, check out your local health food or vitamin store and ask for magnesium diluted in water. "Each manufacturer may have different concentrations of the active ingredient," Engelman tells the Huffington Post; he suggests carefully reading the label beforehand. So here are six skincare benefits that come from magnesium oil!

It treats acne: Because of its natural, anti-inflammatory benefits magnesium oil works wonder on acne-prone skin. There's no real proof it works, but according to Dr. Engelman, there have been quite a few cases where it has. "There's no direct correlation with magnesium oil and improvement of acne," she says. "We've found in retrospect that by supplementing the element, it can actually help–it's not going to hurt."

It reduces oiliness: Struggle with oily skin? Applying a generous amount of magnesium to the face can actually help absorb excess oils and provide balance.

It soothes irritated skin: Not only does it help to bring down swelling and inflammation, but magnesium also helps regenerate skin, making it smoother and softer.

Fights fine lines and wrinkles: It helps nourish skin while restoring and smoothing faster.

Fights dark spots and manchas: Because magnesium helps with the formation of skin cells, it allows it to protect skin from discoloration and lightens dark spots and acne scars.

It moisturizes: It provides tons of hydration only problem is, magnesium oil doesn't mix well with other moisturizers or even makeup. So you want to make sure you allow your skin to fully absorb it before layering on anything else.
