The other day I finally decided to go through my makeup drawer and was pretty bummed out to see quite a few of my favorite cosmetics looking ready to be tossed away. I'll be the first to admit that I'll hold on to a lipgloss as long as possible and my favorite eyeliner until it's been sharpened down to the nub. But like food, makeup has an expiration date, and over time cosmetics can harbor harmful bacteria that can cause irritation or infections. If you've noticed any changes in consistency, color, or odor it may be time to let go. Check out my guidelines below to help you figure out the lifespan of your makeup and tips on how to keep the ones that aren't expired yet, bacteria-free!

Mascara

This is probably the makeup item you should be the most careful with, since its dark and wet nature makes it the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Old mascara also after time will not only develop a foul smell but will become clumpy and flaky, no longer giving you its best results. The lingering bacteria can cause redness and itchiness, so make sure to toss your mascaras every two to three months to stay on the safe side.
Eyeliner

Like mascara, liquid eyeliners should be replaced about every two to three months. Pencil liners can last you a little longer if you keep them sharpened and clean, but try not to exceed four or five months. Because they are applied near a sensitive area, they can pick up bacteria and bring it into your eye very easily.
Foundation

Most foundations are water-based and as a result easily harbor bacteria. Unopened foundation can last a few years, but once the seal has been removed, you should make sure to replace it after 6 to 8 months. You’ll start to notice when your foundation is ready to be tossed away, because the consistency will start to change and it won’t go on as evenly when applied. As for powder foundations, these guys can last you up to two years. But be careful because some powders actually do contain small amounts of water from minerals and botanical extracts!
Blush

Pretty much what applies to face powders you can apply to your powder blushes and bronzers. But for cream blushes, make sure to replace them after 6 months. To preserve the life of any of your blushes, make sure to keep your brushes and applicators clean. Aim to wash them every 4 to 6 weeks.
Lipstick & lipglosses

These formulas contain little to no water content, but don’t let that fool you into thinking they don’t spoil! Because lipstick and glosses are in constant contact with your mouth these can harbor loads of bacteria. They can last you up to a year or more, but if you start to notice a change in their consistency or a funky odor, it’s time to toss!
Eyeshadow

To keep your eyes from getting irritated or itchy, make sure to replace your powder eyeshadows after three months. Even though they are similar to most powders, because they are in constant contact with your eyes, there’s a risk of transferring dirt and bacteria back in your eyes. For cream eyeshadows which tend to grow bacteria much quicker, toss them after two months.
Nail polish

Lucky for all of us, nail polish doesn't go bad from bacteria. However, after time they do dry out and become thick and clumpy. To extend the life of your lacquer, shake it and then add a little bit of paint thinner to make it smoother. But if you notice any color fading, separation or change in consistency, it’s over!
