Choosing the right name for your child can be one of the most difficult tasks you undertake as a parent. 1. Your heritage. Both times I was pregnant, my husband and I knew we wanted our kids' names to reflect our Latino heritage. We also wanted to make sure that the names we chose wouldn't be too difficult to pronounce in either of the languages we speak.
2. How it sounds out loud. You'll be saying your child's name tons of times a day, so make sure to practice saying it out loud a lot before you make a final decision.
3. Does it go with the last name? It's a personal choice, but I've always thought it's weird to have a very Latino last name and choose and extremely American name. Either way, just remember to put the name all together to include first, middle and last name.
4. Trend vs. tradition. Do you want your child to have a unique and uncommon name or do you want his or her name to honor one of your beloved relatives. Decide what's more important to you and look only at names that follow that decision.
5. Nicknames. Consider how the name will sound if it's shortened because you may not like it.
