What to Know
A San Antonio Democratic lawmaker took to social media to spit a Spanish-language sting at President Donald Trump over skyrocketing oil prices. "¡Oye Trump!," State Sen. Roland Gutierrez began in a video posted on X.
The greeting translates to, "Hey, Trump." The senator proceeded to tell off Trump, using Spanish-language profanities.
The 20-second video set to the song "La Economía" by Mexican artist El Georgio, shows news clips reporting the surging price of oil and the upward ticking of a gas pump meter.
The post received hundreds of comments, with several criticizing the senator for his choice of words. Others acknowledged agreement; over 900 "liked" the video.
The post comes at a time when the price of a gallon of regular gasoline in San Antonio has jumped more than 26% to $3.38 compared to a year ago when regular gas cost $2.59 a gallon. The national average is nearly $3.70, compared to $3.08 for a gallon of regular gasoline a year ago.
Gas prices have been on the rise since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran. The subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the nautical corridor that is the passageway for 20% of the world's oil supply, has caused major trade disruptions.
The high oil prices could pose a problem for Republicans during the South Texas congressional races. Folks already were concerned with affordability, and now that economic burden could be exacerbated.
For Gutierrez, it is not likely to be the last time he is outspoken about his political views. Earlier this month, he called Attorney General Ken Paxton "evil," in addition to using a profane term.
Gutierrez, a San Antonio native, represents District 19 in the Texas Senate. It includes all of Crockett, Edwards, Frio, Kinney, Maverick, Real, Terrell, Uvalde, Val Verde and Zavala counties, and parts of Atascosa, Bexar, Brewster and Guadalupe counties.
