Can you image being allergic to your own baby?

If you've ever had an allergic reaction to anything, you know how uncomfortable, painful and even scary that can be. I mean, in many cases, allergic reactions have been known to even cause death. Luckily, most of them are easily treated through medications and shots, but can still cause a lot of discomfort. Imagine then finding out that you're allergic to your unborn son?

Yes, you read right, and that's exactly what happened to first-time mom Dayle Byrom who was plagued by a rash that caused unbearable itching and pain from week 20 in her pregnancy and who was eventually told she was allergic to the testosterone produced while her baby was growing inside of her.

The searing pain was so bad that Byrom even considered terminating the pregnancy because she felt like her it was her body's way of telling her she shouldn't be a mother. I feel terrible for this poor woman who explained her ordeal like this to the Daily Mail:

My skin was on fire. If I touched anything it was agony. All I could do was itch and cry–it felt like someone was ripping my skin off. I tried wearing gloves, but nothing stopped me digging at my skin. All I cared about was scratching, and everyday tasks became impossible.

Reading about Byrom makes all my pregnant ailments seem ludicrous when compared to what she went through, especially because there was nothing she could do to make the pain and itching go away.

Byrom was diagnosed with Polymorphic Eruption of Pregnancy (PEP), which is something I'd never heard of before but apparently affects one in 300 pregnant women–though not as bad as Byrom got it.

So while most new moms worry about their stretch marks, which are usually only visible to a few, 21-year-old Byrom can't even wear shorts or dresses because she's been pretty much scared for life from all the scratching. ¡Pobrecita!
