Life is filled with miracles and this story proves that even in a dark situation, blessings do exist. Nebraskan mom Karla Perez suffered a stroke and was declared brain dead while expecting her unborn child. The 22-year-old mom-to-be was in a coma and struggling for her life. Her family decided to keep her alive until she gave birth to her son. A team of more than 100 medical staff made sure that Perez's baby boy was delivered alive and healthy. What happens next is truly heartbreaking.

In April, Perez's condition worsened and doctors decided to deliver the baby via C-section at 30 weeks. Baby Angel weighed only 2 pounds and 12.6 ounces. The newborn was immediately rushed to the neonatal intensive care unit to make sure he was properly cared for. It's amazing that baby Angel was able to survive despite his mother being in such an extreme health condition.
Although Karla was able to give birth to her baby boy, she passed away right on April 6. I'm sure she tried to hold on to life, but her body ended up giving up on her. It was even a miracle that Karla was able to get pregnant in the first place. She was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and doctors believed there was a low chance she could have a family one day. She managed to overcome the odds, but that wasn't enough.
Angel's grandmother, Berta, spoke about baby Angel's health and told a local station, "Thank God. He's doing very well. He's growing and I'm very happy about it. I come to see him every day. I get him dressed, I give him baths, I change him, I hold him."
It's such a blessing that baby Angel will have his grandmother and family in his life. It pains me that he won't have his mom, but hopefully they keep her legacy alive. I'm sure she'll will be his guardian angel from up above.
