Sometimes it takes hitting rock bottom to change your life around. Leigh Key was a 38-year-old mother of two boys struggling with severe anorexia. At 5-foot-6 she weighed as low as 78 pounds and as much as she loved and cared for her kids, she didn't realize how badly her condition was affecting them until she appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2006. Key spoke with Oprah about how she wasn't able to see what everyone else was pointing out. In her mind, she looked fine, even though she admitted that at one point she even went down to 78 pounds. "Honestly, my arms are too skinny, but I never will say my stomach is too thin," she said.
Oprah confronted her about how her anorexia was affecting her children. "I want to pray and say it's not [affecting them]," she said. "I really want that." Well, that wasn't the case …
Things didn't start sinking in until Oprah played a clip of Key's 9-year-old son, Benton, talking about how his mom had no energy to play with him and hardly ever ate food. He even said how sometimes he wanted to just make her supper so he could see her eat a little more. Oprah called it one of the saddest things she'd ever heard. The kid was even able to pick up on how it was affecting his parent's marriage.
But 8 years later, Key is a whole new woman. Oprah: Where Are They Now? followed up with her to see how she was doing since the last show, and to my surprise Key now weighs a healthy 122 pounds. She has curves, boobs and even her face looks smoother. Tell me she doesn't look amazing! But she admits that it took a while to finally get to where she is today.
"My friends, my family wanted Oprah to maybe shock me into changing my ways, but it wasn't that easy. I guess it just took a little longer than they had thought," she said. Key admits that Benton's video messages was what hit home for her. Now she looks great and her and her family are doing better than ever. I couldn't be happier for her!
