It turns out the big names in 2013 for boys and girls were Noah and Sofia. The brains behind babynamewizard.com, Laura Wattenberg, says that the lists shared by the U.S. Social Security Administration reveal a pattern that will probably lead on into 2014. The top five boy names were Noah, Liam, Jacob, Mason, and William, while the girls had Sofia, Emma, Olivia, Isabella, and Ava rounding out their list.

"You compare Jacob with all its hard, punchy consonants, versus Noah and Liam, you can really see where style is heading," Wattenberg said. However, the difference between baby naming now and in the past is significant. She pointed out that in the 1950's more parents were likely to name their kids the same names. For example, in 1950 over 80,000 Sofia's were born, compared to the 21,000 from last year.
