1. White spots: White dots on your nails are usually due to some type of trauma, like if you bang your finger. They usually fade on their own over time. If they don't, check with your dermatologist to make sure it's not a fungal infection.
2. Dry cuticles: Your nails can get as dehydrated as the rest of your hands and skin during the winter. Using cuticle oil or even a moisturizing hand cream can help the problem.
3. Yellowing: Smoking can turn your fingers yellow. But if you're not a smoker, it could also be a nail fungus, which should be treated by the doctor. Using nail polish too often can also change the color of your nails, so try to take a few days break in between manicures and always use a base coat.
4. Brittle nails: We've all broken a nail now and then, but if yours seem to break with the slightest touch, it could actually be a sign of a thyroid problem. The thyroid gland regulates growth and a disorder could cause thin and easily cracked tips.
5. Rock hard nails: If your nails are strong and don't crack easily, it's a sign of good health. Keep it going by exercising, following a healthy diet, and taking care of your nails and skin.
