Critics Choice Awards 2024: The best, worst & somewhere in between red carpet looks

Even though award shows happen all year, I’d say that the most watched ones take place between November and February. This year has just begun and we’ve already had a chance to witness the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. For me, one of the draws of any awards show is to see what the stars are wearing on the red carpet. Whether the looks are good, bad, or somewhere in between, I just love to see what everyone chose to wear.

More from MamásLatinas: Golden Globes red carpet looks that missed the mark

This year’s guests at the Critics Choice Awards did not disappoint. They showed up and showed out. I thought that the fashion parade at this event, which was held on January 14 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, was pretty interesting. I was surprised to see so many stars opting for white and winter white and nailing it.

Check out my picks for outfits that were best, worst, and somewhere in between at the 2024 Critics Choice Awards.

BEST: America Ferrera in Alberta Ferretti.

Who knew that brown could be such a luxe color? Well, apparently, both America Ferrera and the designer of the Alberta Ferretti dress the actress wore to the awards ceremony. America is looking like a tall drink of sexy coffee—and I love me some coffee.

BEST: Dua Lipa in Prada.

There is so much to love about Dua Lipa’s monochromatic red look. The way her hair color complements the color of the dress is chef’s kiss perfection. Also, she kept her accessories simple so they wouldn’t distract from the texture of the dress.

BEST: Ariana Greenblatt in Louis Vuitton.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Yes to the dress! Yes to the braid! And hell yes to the power pose and confidence. I am in love with this look. Side note: Can we please see Ariana Greenblatt and Jenna Ortega star in some new non-Disney projects together?

BEST: Taraji P. Henson in Boss.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals
Frazer Harrison/Getty

Taraji in this dress is proof that it is possible to wear a white gown and not look like a bride. She looks amazing and the silver shoes are on point. She looks so dang elegant and, in many ways, effortless.

BEST: Fantasia Barrino in Alin Le’Kal.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals

Fantasia also slayed in white. Her white on white ensemble is possibly her best red carpet look of all time. That dress fits her every curve. She looks like the movie star that she is in the best possible way.

BEST: Sandra Oh in Harbison.

Sandra Oh also opted for white and I can see why. This dress drapes beautifully. Plus the length of the dress and the train on it gives the effect that Killing Eve star glides through spaces that mere mortals can only walk on.

BEST: Colman Domingo in Valentino.

He’s dapper and draped in gold and I love it. I made the rounds and saw that not everyone thought this look was a winner, but they just don’t know. Colman is dapper and the world needs more dapperness.

BEST: Christina Ricci in Atsuko Kudo.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals
Jeff Kravitz/Getty

Christina Ricci’s dress looks like it was poured onto her. It could not fit her any better. She looks elegant, strong, and like the star of her own life. The way she holds her head up and dares anyone to mess with her is pretty awesome, too.

BEST: Danielle Brooks in Monsoori.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals
Jeff Kravitz/Getty

This dress has both praised and panned. I’m on the praise wagon. It’s fun, the color combo of dusty pale pink and black is exquisite, and Danielle is radiant in it. I also love that the shape of it is unconventional.

BEST: Steven Yeun in Louis Vuitton.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Press Room
Frazer Harrison/Getty

I love it when men make out-of-the ordinary fashion choices like this. The Beef star looks like the main course of a fancy fashion feast and my eyes are hungry for more of these kinds of looks. Looking forward to seeing more red carpet looks from this rising star.

BEST: Lily Gladstone in Christian Siriano.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals
Taylor Hill/Getty

The Killers of the Flower Moon actress stunned in a Christian Siriano dress in the most beautiful shade of blue. It’s the color for me. The color looks fantastic on Lily. And the cut of the dress, plus the way she wore her hair, just frame her face in the most lovely way.

IN BETWEEN: Ariana DeBose in Givenchy.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals
Jeff Kravitz/Getty

Remember, the "in between" category represents a cross between best and worst dressed. Ariana DeBose falls into this category for me because she looks good, but not necessarily because of the dress. The dress is not the best, but it’s not the worst either.

IN BETWEEN: Charles Melton in Valentino.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals
Taylor Hill/Getty

There is no denying that Charles Melton looks red hot in this suit. But, let’s be honest, what wouldn’t he look good in? I put this down as in between because on the hanger, the suit would do nothing for me, but on the man, it’s kind of the best.

IN BETWEEN: Natasha Lyonne in Dolce & Gabbana.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals
Jeff Kravitz/Getty

I actually love this look. It’s got a punk vibe meets flapper chic and blue collar worker aesthetic. The only reason I’m not completely sold on it as a “best” look is because it’s missing something to make the tank and suspenders be a little more cohesive with the skirt.

IN BETWEEN: Billie Eilish in Thom Browne.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals
Taylor Hill/Getty

Billie Eilish serves up in between red carpet looks for me consistently. I love how she dresses because it is clearly an expression of who she is and I never want that to change. But if she weren’t the one wearing the outfit, it would be a big no for me.

IN BETWEEN: Julianne Moore in Chanel Haute Couture.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals
Taylor Hill/Getty

Hear me out on why this dress Julianne Moore is great and not so great. The color is great and looks wonderful on her. That brooch thing on the chest is kind of dowdy in an un-chic way. She looks good in the dress, but the dress only looks good from certain angles.

WORST: Ashley Madekwe in Balmain.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals
Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/Getty

There is just so much going on in this relatively small dress the The Strays actress wore. There’s the cut of the dress, the pattern of the fabric, and the sort of clashing trim. Put a top hat on her and I would think she was performing in an elegant circus.

WORST: Gretta Gerwig in Molly Goddard.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals
Frazer Harrison/Getty

The multi-talented Greta Gerwig is phenomenal, the dress she wore is not. It’s giving repurposed low thread count bed sheets. The epitome of “I woke up like this.” Cute shoes, though.

WORST: Alison Oliver in Lowe.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals
Jeff Kravitz/Getty

The Saltburn actress wore a Lowe dress that also reminds me of household linens. Only hers are giving more draped curtains than bed sheets. And the shoes are giving pot scrubbers.

WORST: Pedro Pascal in Zegna.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals
Steve Granitz/Getty

He is perfect in every way, but the only way the getup he wore could be worse is if it were in beige instead of greige. Ay, Pedrito, please forgive me, but you look like a gray mummy.

WORST: James Marsden in Dolce & Gabbana.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals
Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/Getty

It’s not that there’s one awful thing about what James wore, it’s that it looks like he picked out his clothes and got dressed in the dark. They all fit him well, but there is nothing that ties all the different colors together.

WORST: Kaley Cuoco in Christian Dior.

29th Annual Critics Choice Awards - Arrivals
Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/Getty

This dress is simply unmemorable and unremarkable. Like why? Out of all the things she could have worn, why this dress? It must be because it has pockets and there is something really special in those pockets, otherwise, I don’t get it.
