Birthing is a messy miraculous amazing experience. It's beautiful while not always being pretty, you know what I mean? I've seen and held my own newborns right after being born, but I've never seen a baby born of a C-section right as it emerges from its mother until now thanks to the amazing skills of Danish photographer Suste Bonnen. She has photographed heads of states and all kinds of important people, but what has always fascinated her is family and this fascination plus unprecedented access to the maternity ward at Copenhagen University Hospital has resulted in some of the most amazingly candid, gory and yet stunningly beautiful photographs of C-section newborns.

Bonnen explains:
A life-long theme for my portrait photography has always been the affection and love displayed between a mother and daughter, a father and a son, a brother and a sister…What suddenly intrigued me, however, was if that feeling of love for life was detectable at first eyesight. What are we emotionally like at the earliest stage in life? What are we like at the very first second?
You are going to be amazed by these pictures. I know I am.

And so it begins
This photo is breathtaking and particularly amazing when you consider the only source of light that Bonnen could use was the surgery lamp.
Gory glory
These births are all C-sections, so they can't help but be bloody and yet the blood doesn't get in the way of the beauty.
Still attached
This baby is so brand new it's still attached to mama.
Grasping for life
It amazes me that a child this young already has such a strong grasp.
Little work of art
This little wonder looks like a sculpture made by one of the great masters. Just perfect.
Each and every one amazes
Here the photographer is surrounded by the unique beauty of each child that she so wonderfully captured.
