The Florida homeless man who had most of his face chewed off by an insane attacker last Memorial Day weekend seems to be doing okay. It's been about a year since the bizarre incident took place and even though Ronald Poppo is blind, 50 pounds heavier, and missing half his face, he refuses to allow that horrifying experience to traumatize his life. In fact, he's been happier than ever, relearning the guitar and trying his best to enjoy life. Isn't this so amazing!

The crazy zombie apocalypse episode happened last year when 31-year-old Rudy Eugene, who many believe may have snorted bath salts, viciously attacked Poppo in Miami and in what sounds like something out of the worst horror flick, actually ATE part of his face. The scary cannibal was eventually shot and killed by police for refusing to stop eating the poor man's face, who was eventually left in very critical condition. But even though he doesn't have his eyesight or half his face, he's still trying to live happily.
Poppo spends most of his time at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he's been given permission to stay indefinitely. And even though he rarely leaves his room, he keeps himself pretty entertained playing his guitar and following Miami Heat games. He even has a video out now on YouTube where he's happily playing and thanking his community for all their support. And you won't believe it, but in a year Poppo has even managed to learn how to feed, dress, shower, and even shave himself. How inspiring is that?
This man is absolutely admirable! I'll admit that I definitely rather die than have to live the rest of my life blind and with a chewed up face. I honestly can't think of anything more horrifying than that. But for Poppo, this really isn't the end of the world. The fact that he's managed to continue on with his life and make efforts to be happy is almost inconceivable to me.
It goes to show you that even when we hit rock bottom, with strength, courage, and determination there's always a way to bring yourself back up. After hearing about how this man was able to overcome this unbelievably traumatizing experience and still find a reason to live and a reason to remain happy, it makes me realize that I really have nothing in life to complain about. In fact, whenever you're feeling down and in the dumps, think about Poppo and how he chose to persevere despite everything he's had to endure.
