Excuse me while I judge someone else's parenting. I know it's awful, but sometimes I start judging before I can stop myself. Finding out that 31-year-old model Vicky Antonia has spent over $30,000 on designer label clothing for her 8-year-old son made me judge her as a mother maybe just a teeny tiny bit. Is it possible to spend too much on your children? I'm not talking about spending money on their medical needs. Heaven forbid, your child or mine find themselves in a situation where much money needs to be spent on medical care. No, I'm talking about spending too much money on clothes for your child(ren). The answer for me is yes. Yes, you can spend too much money on clothes for your kid(s). But how do you decide how much is too much? I mean if you are crazy rich, then you can afford to spend crazy amounts of money to deck your child out, right? Well, sure, but should you?
Vicky Antonia explains that she spends so much money on Zak's clothes because he was premature and spent two months in the intensive care unit after he contracted bacterial meningitis. She calls him her "miracle baby" and I totally agree with her, his survival is a miracle and a blessing. It is a wonderful thing that she did not lose her baby.
Still, buying him absurdly expensive clothing from the time he was born doesn't really have anything to do with the child's well-being and has a lot more to do with the mother's predilections. It just seems like an utter waste of money. Invest that money so that it grows as the child grows. Or if you are already doing that aside from spending tons on clothes he will outgrow in less than a minute, then realize clothes without or without high-end labels are not a testament to your love.
Ugh, who knows maybe I'm being too judgemental. Maybe spending that much money on her child's clothing is good for something: the economy or the fashion industry?
