Eva Longoria__ looked stunning at the 2013 Laureus World Sports Awards in Rio de Janiero, Brazil on Monday night wearing an elegant red gown. But she probably should have gotten her floor-length number hemmed because the star nearly fell flat on her face after tripping on the fabric. Yikes! Let's face it–many of us Latinas tend to be short, so we have to be EXTRA careful when it comes to the length, texture, cuts, and patterns of our clothes. Always aim to dress to appear longer, create a flattering silhouette ,and especially avoid wearing pieces that obviously fit too long. But don't stress, girl! There are definitely ways you can dress up fashionably while also giving the illusion of height. Below are a few styling tips I came up with for all the petite chicas out there!

Go high-waisted
When you’re petite your objective should ALWAYS be to appear longer. Choose pieces that elongate your lower body like a pair of high-waisted jeans (have them hemmed) or a pencil skirt with a waistband that sits right at or slightly above the belly button. Asos.com, $50
High heels
When it comes to looking taller, high heels are your weapons of choice. A flesh-colored or nude pair will instantly elongate your legs, making you appear longer and leaner. Try it in a pointy toe style. Lulus.com, $85
Slim silhouettes

Waist length jacket
Jackets and blazers that hit at your waist are your best friend as they add an illusion of height. Believe me, anything longer will drown your small figure. Gap.com, $98
Try vertical patterned pieces
