According to weather reports, the northeast is supposed to get hit by a severe storm so huge that meteorologists are saying it's going to be WORSE than the "Perfect Storm" of 1991. Reports show that Hurricane Sandy caused serious damage after hitting Cuba, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and as it moves upward it may collide with a cold front coming from Canada. Whether you're calling it a Snowicane or a Frankenstorm, your main concern should be safeproofing your home and coming up with fun indoor activities for the kids.
I know when I've had to stay indoors during hurricanes and snowstorms that sometimes it can get a bit well…boring. There's only so much you can do at home before you get restless. But we've come up with several ways to combat the boredom blues that will keep you and the kids entertained!
1. Have them help you prepare: As with any natural disaster, it's best to prepare for the worst, so take your kids shopping with you beforehand. They can help you pick out canned foods and other non perishables you may need to stock up on. Spoil them this time and let them choose their favorite junk food, but limit it to one. Also make sure to pick up other supplies such as batteries and flashlights in case the power goes out.

2. Break out the board games: In a time when technology trumps any old fashioned trend, why not teach your kids about how you used to play games in the good ol'days. Let's be honest, Scrabble is way more fun than playing Words With Friends on your phone.
3. Let them get in touch with their crafty side: I don't think arts and crafts ever get old. I'm an adult and I love making artsy creations out of miscellaneous matter. Look online for possible arts and crafts idea, but make sure you have the tools at home.
4. Pump up the music: Relying on music to get you through a storm is a great way to liven up the room and ease scared kids. Take turns sharing the different music that the family enjoys and make it a dance party or karaoke!
5. Play Charades: Even though Charades is such a simple game that requires no props, it manages to be entertaining every time. Come up with a fun list of things that both you and your kids can act out without much difficulty.
6. Read a book: Never underestimate the power of a good book. Share some of your favorite childhood reads with your older kids and practice reading with your other little ones. Not only will their reading skills improve, but they'll get a good story out of it.
There you have it! As scary as this crazy storm may be, at least you'll be well prepared for what's to come. Remember to stay safe, check on the abulelos and keep it fun!
