5 Grilling mistakes that are bad for your health

Grilling is absolutely one of my favorite parts of summer. When the weather is warm and I can get outside, I tend to grill just about anything I can get my hands on: pineapple and mangoes for dessert, sofrito grilled bread for family gatherings, rum-soaked fruit skewers just because, chili-lime vegetarian tacos for dinner, Latin burgers and anything else I can think of.

Grilling isn't ALL fun and games, though. There are some mistakes you can make—mistakes that can actually be quite bad for your health, according to a new report from the Boston Globe. What are those mistakes, you ask? Take a look at our easy grilling mistakes guide to make sure that, when you're feeding your family from the grill, you're making all the right choices.

1. Not wiping down grills

It's possible that bristles can fall off the brush and be ingested later, so make sure to ALWAYS wipe your grills down with a wet cloth to catch any stray ones.

2. Thinking burnt on the outside means cooked on the inside

Avoid food poisoning by making sure that your burgers, steaks and chicken are cooked to 160 degrees F on the inside with a meat thermometer. Otherwise, cut open the flesh and make sure there's no pink left.

3. Spraying on Pam after the grill is already lit

If you learned nothing from the man that caught on fire after putting on sunscreen, then take note: all spraying must happen AWAY from the grill because it can actually be a pretty serious fire hazard.

4. Moving grills into the garage when it rains

It's one thing to put your grill in an open but covered area (which is totally fine) but putting it inside the garage puts your family at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Yikes!

5. Leaving a grill unattended

I hope I shouldn't have to tell you this, but leaving a grill unattended even for a few minutes can cause a serious problem. This is the fire department's main concern, so just DO NOT do it!
