The new kids' book, Gustavo the Shy Ghost by Flavia Z. Drago, is one of the best kids' books that I've had the chance to introduce to my children. As the mom of a couple of introverted kids, this book is such a joy to read to them and dissect. And my 2-year-old, though not able to read and understand the concepts yet, was totally enthralled with the beautiful art.
Gustavo is a shy but really sweet ghost.
He feels that he is invisible when he tries to talk to others or make friends. What parent of a quiet kid hasn't tried to navigate this world, trying to tell them to go out and speak up, while respecting their personalities? The book makes it so easy to talk about those feelings, all while keeping it fun and Halloween-themed.
Gustavo learns to express himself through music.
Whether it's music, writing, drawing, it's a great springboard to get your kids, if they're shy like Gustavo, to explore their creative side and use that to do their talking.
In the end, Gustavo has so many friends!
Of course, in real life, it won't be as easy, but the book will give kids ideas—and with their parents' help and guidance will hopefully be inspired to reach out and make friends. Also, Gustavo "was the best at helping and protecting his friends," which is such an important concept to teach kids about from a young age: being kind always.
