Beyoncé might seem superhuman to the rest of the world, but to her kids, she's just mom. She officially took on the role of mom when she gave birth to her eldest, Blue Ivy, in 2012. For five years, Blue was an only child. Then, in June 2017, Bey welcomed twins, Sir and Rumi. Bey and her husband, rapper Jay-Z, now have a family of five. Although, the ultra-famous couple is also ultra-private, they have shared small glimpses into their lives as parents.
The "Otherside" singer revealed that she endured a terrifying health scare when she welcomed her twins and it made her reevaluate everything she thought about herself, motherhood, and her own body image. She shared how when she gave birth to Blue, she worked tirelessly to get her body back into shape because she succumbed to society's pressures. The second time around, she decided to be gentler to her body.
More from MamásLatinas: Celebrity moms who took long career breaks to take care of their babies
While Bey and her Bey-bies live quite luxurious lives, seeing her open up about some of the same family struggles we all deal with makes her a lot more relatable than the Sasha Fierce alter ego she portrays on stage. Not only has she broken many barriers and records in her career—she holds the record for most Grammys won by an artist—Bey is also making sure that she is a guiding force for her children.
She has made it a point to protect her kids' privacy through the years, but seeing her in matching mom and daughter outfits with Blue on Instagram, holding her twins, and making sure her Blue conducts herself with dignity at major events reminds us that no matter how put-together her life looks, she's a regular mom like the rest of us. Click through to see the many times Beyoncé reminded us that she was just like every other mom on the planet. Well, sort of.
She takes her eldest daughter to work.
Beyoncé didn’t just bring Blue to work during her Renaissance World Tour, she put her daughter to work as a dancer. On May 29, 2023, a very proud mama posted images of Blue making her tour debut and captioned them: “My beautiful first born I’m so proud and thankful to be your mama. You bring us so much joy, my sweet angel.” Way to keep an eye on your child while helping them earn that generational wealth!
Safety first.
OK, OK, OK. So most of us aren't jet-setting on helicopters with our kids, but do you see how tight Bey is gripping her youngest daughter Rumi's hand? It would be just like a toddler to dart off into the danger zone, and Beyoncé clearly knows this as a mom of three.
There's always time for a selfie.
If our kids aren't stealing our phones to take their own selfies, they're asking us to take some with them. Seems Blue Ivy is just like most other little girls her age and loves to take selfies with her mama.
She lights up when talking about her kids.
While most moms can't wait to talk about their babies to anyone who is willing to listen, the Grammy winner is super private when it comes to her kids. But when Bey sat down for a chat with Oprah in 2013, a year after Blue was born, and she was so proud and glowing when talking about her firstborn. "She's hilarious and she is fire!" the singer shared. "I didn't expect her to be fire, but Lord, I'm gonna have me a time."
Beyoncé opened up about having a miscarriage.
Before she gave birth to daughter Blue Ivy in January 2012, Beyoncé shared that she had suffered a miscarriage in her documentary, Beyoncé: Life Is But a Dream. She was afraid during Blue's pregnancy that it would happen again so she kept it a secret for some time. She said she shared her miscarriage story so that other parents who have gone through the same wouldn't feel alone.
Any moment is an opportunity to take pics.
The mother of three also makes her kids pose for pics with her, just like the rest of us. Here is a sweet moment between Bey and her oldest daughter, Blue Ivy, taking a selfie. We bet the results were just beautiful!
She gets emotional when it comes to her babies.
When Blue and Jay presented the singer with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the VMAs in 2014, the baby girl clapped for her mamá and said, "Good job, mommy." Bey lost it and started crying on stage. What a moment!
Sometimes you have to level with your kids.
When the mom and daughter duo walked down the red carpet at the 2016 VMAs, Blue didn't want to stop in front of the photographers for pics so Bey gave her a bit of a talking to.
She has mom and daughter dance parties.
The "Single Ladies" singer makes it a point to share and capture her adorable moments with her first baby. Beyoncé and Blue Ivy have such a beautiful connection. It is always so nice to see them together.
She teaches her oldest child how to care for her siblings.
Someone's gotta show Blue how to be a good big sis. And, as moms, we know very well how important it is to teach our older children to take care of their younger siblings. And we are sure that Beyoncé's first-born is caring and loves her little brother and sister.
She gets pregnancy lips, too!
Bey is not immune to the many changes our bodies go through when creating a new life. However, she looked so beautiful during both pregnancies. She has embraced her pregnancy curves and we love her for that.
She does matching mom-and-daughter outfits.
Blue Ivy celebrated her last Mother's Day as an only child with her mom in 2017. The two beauties wore beautiful matching floral dresses and headed to the ice cream museum. They looked so cute!
She embarrasses her kids, too.
While Bey might be the greatest entertainer alive, her daughter Blue was not happy during one of her mom and dad's recent concerts. While some NSFW images of the couple flashed on the screen, Blue looked on in horror and eventually ducked for cover to avoid seeing her parents nearly naked. Every mom has embarrassed their kids at least once in their life, right?
Bey gave Blue the look.
Blue has become a staple at award shows and during the Grammys 2018, after going viral for making her parents quiet down, Bey gave her child the stern mom look. I remember when my mom just needed to give me that look.
But most of all, Bey makes her babies proud, too.
Blue was in the audience when her mom accepted the CFDA Fashion Icon award in 2016. The child was in audience waving and snapping pics of her mom during her acceptance speech, and intently listening to her mom's words. So cute!
Bey is serious when it comes to her mommy duties.
Her schedule might be super hectic, but Bey revealed that she takes Blue to school herself in the mornings. "Droppin' my daughter off at school every morning," she said in the 2018 track "Boss" from her joint album with Jay-Z, Everything is Love.
Bey knows that silly selfies with your kids is where it's at.
While her Snapchat is private, Bey shared this selfie using a deer filter with Bey on Instagram. We bet this makes any mom feel normal when it comes to have thousands of selfies with your kids on your camera roll.
She believes she was meant to have twins to make peace with her past.
"I come from a lineage of broken male-female relationships, abuse of power, and mistrust. Only when I saw that clearly was I able to resolve those conflicts in my own relationship. Connecting to the past and knowing our history makes us both bruised and beautiful," she revealed to Vogue in September 2018. "I now believe it’s why God blessed me with my twins. Male and female energy was able to coexist and grow in my blood for the first time. I pray that I am able to break the generational curses in my family and that my children will have less complicated lives."
She faced a health scare after giving birth to her twins.
Beyoncé opened up like never before about how her and her twins' were at risk when she gave birth to them in June 2017. "I was 218 pounds the day I gave birth to Rumi and Sir. I was swollen from toxemia and had been on bed rest for over a month," she told Vogue. "My health and my babies’ health were in danger, so I had an emergency C-section. We spent many weeks in the NICU."
She opened up about how the C-section affected her.
"After the C-section, my core felt different. It had been major surgery. Some of your organs are shifted temporarily, and in rare cases, removed temporarily during delivery. I am not sure everyone understands that. I needed time to heal, to recover. During my recovery, I gave myself self-love and self-care, and I embraced being curvier," she shared in August 2018. "But I was patient with myself and enjoyed my fuller curves. My kids and husband did, too."
She learned to embrace her curves.
"To this day my arms, shoulders, breasts, and thighs are fuller. I have a little mommy pouch, and I’m in no rush to get rid of it. I think it’s real," she said. "Whenever I’m ready to get a six-pack, I will go into beast zone and work my ass off until I have it. But right now, my little FUPA and I feel like we are meant to be."
She has matching Halloween costumes for the whole family.
The whole family went with a Barbie theme for Halloween 2016, and although Blue doesn't look too happy here, this is a memory they'll always share. We always stan for themed costumes and Jay and Bey always do it right.
She knows when to rely on others for support.
She's opened up about how difficult it was for her after she gave birth to her twins but said her husband was a huge help. "My husband was a soldier and such a strong support system for me. I am proud to have been a witness to his strength and evolution as a man, a best friend, and a father," she told Vogue. "I was in survival mode and did not grasp it all until months later. Today I have a connection to any parent who has been through such an experience."
She leans on her mom for help.
Since Blue was born, her mom Tina has been right by their side. This intergenerational bonding is so important. Also, it's beautiful that Bey is modeling a close and loving relationship to her own mother so that her kids and she can have the same when they are grown.
She's always protecting her cubs.
In this pic you can tell she was protecting Blue from either the sun or the paparazzi or maybe both. While in protective mode, she's also in support mode and letting her child know that she's always a source of comfort and safety.
