Researchers found that unborn babies exposed to phthalates often found in personal beauty products lipstick, hairspray, and nail polish ended up having an IQ score six points lower than the average score. The study explains that while avoiding these products may be difficult, pregnant women should cut their exposure to scented products and the beauty items previously mentioned. They also recommend for pregnant women to stay away from heating leftovers in plastic containers since it also contains phthalates.

The study examined about 330 pregnant moms in their third trimester and analyzed the toxins in their system. They later followed-up with the families after seven years to determine the differences in IQ depending on how much exposure the unborn baby had to the common chemical. The moms who were exposed to the most phthalates had children with 6.6 to 7.6 lower IQs compared to mothers that had a lower chemical count in their system. This makes a huge difference in reaching academic achievement at an early age.

Having a wiser kid could mean that you'll have to lay off on a lot of beauty favorites, including nail polish. What is a pregnant beauty obsessed mom to do? Wait until after the pregnancy to visit the nail salon! Your smart baby will thank you later in life.
