To control the volume: There are kids that love loud sounds, in particular the bass. Others freak out with noise at high volume. If your kid is part of the first group, there are wonderful speaker systems that connect to you phone of tablet wirelessly and they're ideal to get rid of cables. If your child needs more tame sounds, you can put  tape or plastic wrapping paper for cooking over the speaker.

To protect it from damage: There are many covers for rough little hands. The best aren't cheap, but they cost much less than replacing the machine. My son's iPad has a cover that was developed for Army use and has protected it from serious abuse.

Get an external keyboard: If your little one is having trouble with the keyboard on the screen, get an external one. Just make sure it's made out of plastic–they are tough and soft at the same time. You know, as well as I do, why this is important.
