If you are up for it, get ready to see an ASTOUNDING picture of a woman giving birth in front of a clinic in Oaxaca, Mexico. It is not the kind of picture you see every day and it literally shows the woman moments after giving birth with her baby lying on the grass below her and still attached by the umbilical cord. The picture was taken by an onlooker and was used as the cover for La Rázon de México newspaper. The woman pictured is 28-year-old Irma López Aurelio and if you are thinking she had the baby outside of the clinic because she just didn't make it there in time, you would be wrong.

Irma and her husband headed to the clinic just before dawn on October 2. By the time she got to the clinic she was fully dilated and her water had broken. The health center was shorthanded because of a work stoppage and supposedly asked López and her husband to wait outside while they prepped for delivery.
López and her husband do not speak Spanish, they are indigenous people from the Sierra Mazateca region where Spanish is not widely spoken. All they understood of what the staff said was, "no." They stepped outside and continued to pace back and forth then two hours later, López gave birth on a patch of grass in front of the clinic. Staff from the clinic ran out to help her and her newborn baby.
She and the baby were brought in and cared for, but COME ON! I totally get it that the clinic was understaffed, I totally get that there was a language barrier, but that is no excuse to send a woman who is in active labor outside to wait.
Mexican authorities are investigating possible negligence in the case and Irma as well as witnesses will be interviewed. Oaxaca Health Secretary German Tenorio said, that staff claims to have gone out to look for the woman, but "when they went out to look for her they didn't find her." I'm not sure I'm buying it.
