As a first-time mom it can be tough to remember all the gear you may need on even the shortest outings. A lot of us either end up packing practically the entire nursery or forgetting some of the most important items–sometimes, we even pack up nearly every thing and still wind up forgetting something, like, oh … diapers. But never fear, your diaper bag doesn't have to weigh more than your baby if you simply pare your haul down to just the essentials. Check out our cheat sheet below:

Diapers. Probably seems obvious, but I've been caught in the sticky situation of not having enough diapers. Now, my general guideline is to ALWAYS keep at least three fresh ones in the bag at all times. That means I usually have to refill at least once a week, but better safe than sorry–trust me.
Wipes. I've gone from carrying just a few wipes in a zip-top bag for my baby to carrying an entire refill pack for my toddler. Baby wipes are perfect for cleaning up all sorts of messes from blowouts to sticky car seats.
Burp cloth. I like to keep a cloth-diaper style burp cloth on hand when we're out to gently clean a runny nose, use as a changing pad in a pinch or even as a lovie on a long car drive. Believe it or not, they are great for both babies and toddlers.
Snacks. It's crucial to keep an emergency snack in your diaper bag. Any outing has the potential to take longer than expected and could run into a scheduled meal or snacktime. Keep some dry cereal, freeze-dried fruit, formula, a sippy of water, etc. packed for unforeseen events.
Toys. Grab a few small toys that won't be missed if they get lost and load them into your diaper bag. They could buy you a few extra moments of sanity if you're stuck in traffic or waiting in a long line at the grocery store.
Muslin blanket. I get so much use out of these things! These blankets can be used as nursing covers, car seat covers, playmats and of course, to cozy up with during a car nap.
Diaper cream. Have you noticed that I really like multi-purpose items? At first glance, diaper cream may seem to have one use, but if you buy a version that is zinc oxide based, it can be used to prevent chafing at the beach, to ease discomfort from a drool rash, as a first-aid cream for minor scrapes and burns and even as an emergency sunscreen.
Hand sanitizer. I like to keep a small tube around for cleaning up after I change a poopy diaper, but they are also great to have on hand after playdates and other outings where there are lots of people around such as at the zoo, a farm or even the mall.
An outfit. Puke, poop and pee happen, and sometimes they happen on a larger scale than anticipated. When they do, you'll want to be prepared. A T-shirt and sweats does the trick.
*Items such as pacifiers, lovies and medications aren't included here since they are not used by all children.
