It's inevitable: Your daughter will grow up and she will start dating! So the question, moms, isn't "How can I stop my daughter from going out with muchachos?" but rather: "How can I empower my daughter to make the right decisions about dating?"–things like, dating the right kind of guys, making sure to respect herself, and protecting herself from getting hurt.
All of this can be really scary for moms. But fear not, mamis: Jasmine V is here to help! The 19-year-old singer, who recently signed a record deal with Interscope Records, took time from her busy schedule to share some dating tips that moms can share with their daughters. 1. Make sure your daughter's ready to date: "I got pressured from my friends a lot to start dating and I wasn't ready," Jasmine tells us. "As a parent, you should make sure your daughter knows that peer pressure is common and that you need to be a leader and do what's best (and what's comfortable) for you–no matter what your friends are doing," she says.
2.Tell her good guys know her worth: "Growing up it's expected that guys try to persuade you to do things faster than you want. Tell your daughter that a good guy will never force her to do anything she doesn't want to do," Jasmine says. "A clear sign of a guy you want to keep is a gentleman who wont pressure you to do something–look for those signs," she says.
3.Meet the parents: "If a guy is really into you, he will try to make sure your parents are comfortable with you leaving to go on a date with him," Jasmine says, adding that the right kind of guy will try his best to impress (and earn the trust of) your parents.
4. A guy should make her better and happier: "The best sign that a guy is a keeper is if he makes her happy," Jasmine says. "Don't date for the wrong reasons such as money, popularity or any other material reasons–date a guy because he genuinely makes you happy and makes you a better person … Dating a guy that you can honestly call your best friend is the best situation possible."
5. R.E.S.P.E.C.T: "Make sure above all that you tell your daughter that love is respect," Jasmine says. "I know I've learned this the hard way in my dating experiences, but your daughter must know how important respect is in a relationship. So, make sure you tell her the difference between a healthy and a destructive relationship."
