Moms, it’s ok if you don’t breastfeed no matter what anyone else says

Get ready to be unsurprised by the latest study about the benefits of breast milk. Researchers in the United Kingdom looked at 34,000 people and found that 24 percent of children who were breastfed were more likely to reach a higher social class than their parents and 20 percent less likely to move down the social ladder.

The study took groups of people either born in 1958 or 1970 and compared their social class at the ages of 33 to 34 to the social class of their fathers when the participants were children. So guess what? Breastfeeding is still considered awesome and best. Is anyone surprised?

Now let's get personal with this. I breastfed my kids. As a matter of fact, I'm still breastfeeding my 2-year-old (I stopped briefly while on medication, but now I'm back at it). My first child had to be supplemented because I never made enough milk for her and my second was on the boob-juice exclusively.

I'm glad I was able to breastfeed. I felt unbelievably guilty that I had to supplement with my first, like I had failed her and was doing a huge disservice to her. Why? Because of studies like this one and all the judgement that goes along with giving your child formula.

I'm sick and tired of mothers who don't breastfeed for whatever reason having to feel guilty about it. Yes, breast milk is AWESOME and made specifically for your child and your boobies shoot rainbow colored good-vibes into your child when you nurse, but enough with the guilting.

This study says that 24 percent of breastfed kids end up being better social climbers? So the other 76 percent weren't affected my the magical social climbing powers of breast milk. If you flip the numbers it can make women who aren't able to breastfeed better. Let's put it in perspective.

Why do we keep doing these studies to prove that breast is best? Yes, in a perfect world without women having to go back to work, or inverted nipples, or all sorts of issues, everyone would breastfeed, but we don't live in a perfect world and breastfeeding doesn't work for everyone so stop with the guilting already.
