1. Be as prepared as possible. Make a list of everything you need to bring–blankets, lots of snacks, water, hand wipes, electronic chargers, etc.–and double check you have it allbefore heading off.
2. Schedule in breaks. If you try to drive all the way without any stops, no one is going to be happy. So plan plenty of time for restroom breaks and to get out and stretch.
3. Bring on the games! Pack a goody bag of sorts for your kids so that they'll stay entertained while traveling. Depending on their age, it can include things like reading or audio books, coloring or puzzle books, a journal, travel-sized board games, or small toys.
4. Make a family playlist. Good music makes any car ride better! Create a playlist that combines your family's favorite songs.
5. Map out the route in advance. Winging it with the kids in the car probably isn't the best idea as you could get end up getting lost and being on the road much longer than necessary. Plus, if you plan beforehand, you can pick out interesting landmarks for you and your kids to look out for.
6. Play non-screen car games as a family. If your kids get bored of their toys and you want to get them off their electronics for a while, get everyone involved in a round of car-friendly games, like the License Plate Game, 20 Questions, or Name That Tune.
7. Document the whole thing! Take pictures on your phone or bring along a camera. You and your kids will have fun snapping shots of the landscape or funny ones of each other.
