Let's say you were driving and saw a pickup truck with a cage that contained both a dog and a girl inside of it. What would you do? Would you think it was totally normal and just go about your business? Probably not. That's why motorists on the Pennsylvania Turnpike called the police when they saw a 10-year-old girl caged in the back of a pickup truck on Monday at about 7p.m.

Authorities promptly responded and pulled over the vehicle. Inside the truck's cabin were Thomas Fishinger, the girl's stepfather, and Abbey Carlson, the girl's mother. They have both been charged with endangering the welfare of a child and have both been released on their own recognizance and the little girl is fine.
Now, you are probably wondering why the girl was in a cage with a dog. According to Fishinger, "She wanted to be with her dog. She plays with him in [the cage] all the time. They were strapped in. I didn't think it was that big of a deal. We weren't going fast." Well, sometimes my kids want to climb into the washing machine when it's not on, but I still don't let them. Wouldn't be prudent.
I really don't think that the 29-year-old mother and 30-year-old stepfather had any intention of harming their daughter, they just made a very bad call. We've come a long way from the days of even being able to ride in the back of a pickup truck and even in the 70s when seeing kids bouncing around the back of a truck was a fairly regular sight, seeing them in a cage would have still caused concern.
