Summer is just around the corner and after going through my son's clothes I've discovered that we're just about out of hand-me-downs and reusing his newborn gear is definitely not an option.
So, I've spent the past few weeks curating his summer wardrobe.

For the most part we'll make do with plain white cotton onesies and lightweight pants or shorts, but there are a few items I've deemed must-haves, especially for when we're out and about.
Here are six items you should seriously consider purchasing for your little one this summer:
Rash Guard
I had no clue what a rash guard was until I had a child, but I'm glad I learned. These stretchy shirts are available in long- and short-sleeve versions and have SPF protection built in, so your tot's sensitive skin will be well protected during a day at the pool or the beach. Short-Sleeve Jammies
There's no air-conditioning in my son's room, so I don't want to put him in long pajamas on warm nights, but I think he'll need more coverage than what a onesie offers. When I came across some two-piece short-sleeve pajamas, my dilemma was solved. I especially love the Carter's four-piece sets — they each come with long pants and shorts and two short-sleeve tops and feature fun prints in bright colors. Carter's 4-Piece Cotton Pajama Set, $15
Sun Hat
A lightweight cotton hat with a brim is perfect for both keeping the sun out of your baby's eyes and off of her delicate skin when you're out and about. It's no fun smearing sunscreen on a small baby and I don't love the idea of using it if it's not all-natural which is hard to find, and in fact, it's not recommended for babies under six months, so protection in the form of clothing is super-important for infants and toddlers. Flip Flops
Okay, so this one may be slightly gratuitous since flip flops are probably not the most comfortable or safest footwear for babies — or for adults for that matter — but teeny tiny baby toes just look so adorable in them! For a few dollars, it's well worth the smile they'll put on your face every time you catch a glimpse. Flip Flops, $3.94
Sunglasses
Sunglasses my also seem gratuitous, but I actually believe they are useful. We're not even in the heat of summer yet and I find my little guy squinting on most of our walks. It's uncomfortable for my eyes to be unprotected on a sunny day, so it must be for him as well. Plus, your baby will look super-stylish! Swim Diaper
Babies are not allowed in most public pools without a swim diaper, so if you plan on getting any laps in with your little one this summer, you will need some type of swim diaper. You can buy disposables, but they are expensive and you may not end up using the whole pack. I suggest purchasing a reusable version. They are inexpensive and you can use one for the entire summer.
