Just because the kids are back in school, it doesn't mean that the family fun needs to stop. Fall can be a beautiful time for short getaways, with the air getting cooler and many great things to do.
Whether you're in apple-picking country or can still squeeze in a few beach weekends, fall is a wonderful time to make new memories with your family. I love to pack the kids into the car, look on my state's tourism website, and hit the road. Here are a few tips for keeping sane on the road.
Gas up early
Let's face it–stopping on the road with kids can be a real hassle. From, "Can you buy me a soda?" to "I have to go to the bathroom!" (for the 10th time), it's good to avoid gas stations when traveling with kids when possible. Gas up before the trip. Of course, if you have a fuel-efficient car like the Chevy Malibu, that's even better. (EPA-estimated 34 MPG on the highway).
Pack toys and games
If "Are we there yet?" makes you want to cringe, the key to keeping it down to a minimum is entertainment. Even a little travel board game can go a long way. If your kids are old enough for electronics, pack a portable game system, or a DVD player… they can entertain the kids for hours! The new 2013 Chevy Malibu has easy to use entertainment available options from phone to streaming mobile apps with Bluetooth® wireless technology† Even if you try to limit electronics at home, on the road they can be a life-saver for all involved.
Make stops efficient
If you must stop, make sure you have a plan. Make sure everyone uses the bathroom (to avoid having to stop again half an hour later), get what you need and hit the road. It's hard to avoid fast food, but try… it just makes everyone cranky and makes it more likely that little tummies will get upset. Instead, pack healthy snacks and let the kids grab them at will during the trip. (Don't forget a bag or a little garbage can for your car… a must!).
Pick a destination the kids will love
If they're excited about where they're going, they are much more likely to cooperate on the road. Make it fun!
With a little planning, a long trip can go smoothly with kids. If you are in the market for a new car, shopping for a kid-friendly one like the Malibu, with its roomy trunk and great gas mileage, can go a long way. Besides that, a little pre-planning can make getting there half the fun. Happy travels!
