You've heard all about what you shouldn't do while you're pregnant by now. You know that you shouldn't be drinking alcohol, eating shellfish, and you should ESPECIALLY not be smoking. I thought these rules were clear by now, so why are there STILL so many pregnant women smoking?! A recent study done on European children revealed that kids whose mothers smoked during pregnancy–EVEN as early as the first trimester–were at a greater risk of developing asthma. Gee, you think?
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that smoking is bad for your health–especially when you have a baby growing inside you. Despite what you see on Mad Men, pregnancy and smoking do NOT go together (besides, that show is from the 60s, so by now we SHOULD know better, right?). How selfish does a person have to be to choose to satisfy their nicotine craving over protecting their OWN future child's health?

Most studies done in the past have shown us that it's unhealthy to expose your child to secondhand smoke. Now this new research is revealing that children whose mothers smoked while they were in the womb were more likely to develop asthma by age 6.
Researchers concluded that the exposure to tobacco smoke affects a child's lung development while in the womb and raises their chances of developing asthma later in life.

It's absurd that many women still aren't taking responsibility for their health, especially when it involves the creation of another life. It's a known fact that pregnant women who smoke also have a higher rate of underweight babies, miscarriages, birth defects and other health complications. WHY would anyone ever want to put themselves and their baby in that danger?
