Hateful father disowns his gay son in heart-wrenching letter

I can't imagine anyone being so heartless as to disown their child for their sexual orientation, but the truth of the matter is that this kind of thing happens every single day.

It absolutely breaks my heart that a man has just shared his dad's absolutely horrible letter, disowning his own child because he's a homosexual, on web forum Reddit. The letter, in which the dad tells the son to not "expect any further conversations with me," is one of the most cruel things I have ever read. Seriously, how can anybody be so heartless to their own child? This is something that I will NEVER understand.

The man that shared his father's letter, James, said that he received his dad's letter in response to a phone call five years ago, when James came out to his dad only to be disowned. In sharing the letter, though, James makes a point that "this is how hate sounds." To me, hate sounds disgusting and I don't understand how anyone can call themselves a parent and reject their child. The dad writes:

I will not come to visit, nor do I want you in my house. […] If you choose not to attend my funeral, my friends and family will understand. Have a good birthday and a good life. No present exchanges will be accepted. Goodbye, Dad.

Okay, really?! This man is ending a relationship with his flesh and blood (with whom he admits to having "fond memories") because of his son's "unnatural lifestyle"? This really, really makes me sick. After James posted the letter, though, he was met with an outpouring of sympathy and people pointing out the hypocrisy of his dad rejecting his son because of God and yet being divorced (something that the Bible definitely doesn't approve of).

I hope that, now that it's been five years, James will share his brave story with the It Gets Better campaign and show gay teens that, even when you get a rejection letter from your own parents, you will survive and (hopefully) prosper.
