Just the thought of it makes me want to barf. Imagine thinking that your mother-in-law– who's supposed to be staying with you to help take care of your newborn baby–is rocking her grandson to sleep only to walk into the room and see her suckling your son on her breast! That's exactly what happened to a woman who asked for guidance during a live chat with Emily Yoffe, the writer behind Slate's "Dear Prudence" column.
The woman says she was livid (I would've been, too!) and wanted to know if she should call the police and if her MIL should be allowed near her baby son ever again.

While I think what the mother-in-law did is absolutely disgusting, I don't think it merits calling the police. Nor do I think that barring her from seeing her own grandson is the solution. But what is?
I can't even begin to imagine how I would've reacted if this had happened with my own MIL. When I had my first child, she basically moved-in with us to help us deal with all the changes coming our way. While she pretty much left the baby care to me and did the cooking and cleaning herself, she obviously still got to spend a lot of time with her granddaughter. It never ever occured to me that she would do something crazy like letting Vanessa suckle her breast… yuck!

If I had found her doing that, I would've gone crazy and I would've told her she had to leave. I'm not sure how long it would take for me to be able to see her face-to-face again. I guess both the woman and her husband in this mortifying story need to talk to the MIL to make sure she understand this is unacceptable behavior, but I honestly would have a really hard time trusting her to be alone with the baby again.
