Colombian rock star Juanes has always had a passion for helping others. From establishing the Mi Sangre Foundation to help the victims of land mines to organizing the Peace Without Borders concert in Havana, Cuba, he has dedicated himself to helping others. The Latino dropout rate in the United States is sky high and the Colombian superstar came to New York City to visit Celia Cruz High School of Music in the Bronx to share his music and experience with the students. He told them some of his favorite moments and how he got started with music (he picked up a guitar for the first time at 6 or 7 years old). He explained how he became influenced by metal rock bands like Metallica and how it led to his early success in the band Ekhymosis. But what he most spoke about was his passion for music and belief in both music education and the importance of learning.
He stressed that the key to success in life is to finish school, encouraging all of the kids to make sure they complete their education. But I also got a chance to talk to him about why he got involved in this program and how he thinks parents should help their kids learn about music. He told me that parents should encourage, not force, their kids to fall in love with music by listening to it together or even taking classes. He explains:
There's lots of ways to do it. From listening to CDs together to if someone has the chance to go to a music school. Never force them. Just give them the tools and opportunity to love it.
