In a shocking story (corny pun fully intended), a pregnant woman was struck by lightning in Ohio earlier today.
Kelly Lough was holding an umbrella and getting into a car outside her Cincinnati home when she saw a huge flash and felt a "full body jolt." After being rushed to the hospital, doctors said that both Lough and her unborn daughter, who is due this summer, are both perfectly healthy and will not suffer any long-term damages. But even more incredibly? Medics said the mom-to-be and her baby owe their lives to Lough's shoes!
Apparently, Lough was wearing rubber-soled shoes, which absorbed the electrical impact and helped take the shock away from her and her baby. "Usually on my way to work, I would have had heels on," Lough said of the strange (but super lucky!) turn of events. And in even more of a coincidence, Lough had reportedly been planning on throwing rubber-soled shoes away the night before and changed her mind at the last minute. Spooky, right?
While I'm glad that both mom and baby are totally OK, I'm in complete astonishment that this even happened. It all reads like a bad movie scene or a very unfunny joke. I mean, I'm already pretty terrified of pregnancy and the idea of giving birth (seriously, it looks so painful). But now I have to be scared of getting hit by lightning WHILE pregnant?! Really? Don't moms-to-be have enough to worry about? Why hasn't anyone invented an ultra protective force field for pregnant women yet?
All I can say is that, after hearing this story, one thing's for sure–in the future, if or when I am pregnant and carrying a baby, I will definitely not be the one holding the umbrella!
