Many people think this Ohio mom of a 13-year-old daughter went too far when she punished her child by putting a photo of her on Facebook bearing a red circle with an X in the middle across her mouth and the following message:
I DO NOT KNOW HOW TO KEEP MY [MOUTH SHUT]
I am no longer allowed on Facebook or on my phone
Please ask why. My mom says I have to answer everyone that asks
Some people, including a lot of parents, think it was completely uncalled for, humiliating and even described it as cyber-bullying. But the mom, Denise Abbott is standing by her decision and says she's confident it was the right one to get her daughter's attention and as punishment for talking back and bad mouthing her online. And I'm 100% with this mom!
Abbott, who shared her story with a local TV news station, says she received numerous phone calls from network television shows within 36 hours and even some international ones from Toronto and Australia. She'll be on the Today show tomorrow morning defending her decision, which has been criticized by everybody from Rosie O'Donnell to Elizabeth Hasselbeck of The View.
According to parenting experts, public humiliation is never a good tactic when punishing children, but I agree with Abbott who says that what she did is not for everyone. She understands that some children wouldn't be able to take the embarrassment, but she says she was confident her daughter, whom she considers to have a strong character, would be fine.

I also agree with Abbott that times have changed and that, as a parent, you have to adapt to adapt your parenting skills to these changes. In other words, the kind of punishments that worked in the past are no longer as successful in this era when social media is king for teenagers.
