It's called "existential essence" and the U.S. is the world's leading exporter in it. Oh yea, did I mention that it's actually SPERM?
That's right, sperm.
With nearly 700 sperm banks, it seems that America is exporting more sperm than any other country. I'll take a second while you giggle (it's okay, I did!). In a report on CBS This Morning, TIME magazine senior editor Jeffrey Kluger talks about the recent story's findings—and why, exactly, the world seems to be in love with our nation's little swimmers.

The reason for the new love of U.S. semen isn't what you probably think, though. It isn't that our men are stronger, more handsome or smarter than the men in any other part of the world (though I'm sure we'd all like to think so), but more that America has very strict controls on what sperm is actually accepted into clinics—which makes it a safer, better product for those seeking from abroad.
The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) has very strict controls on who can donate sperm. They also have very specific screenings, which all adds up to a lot of quality control on sperm. Plus, because we are a very diverse country, there is a great ethnic variety in the sperm being exported. Basically, because of the "variety of product", couples from abroad who come seeking sperm can get an ethnic match. Pretty good, isn't it?
And, of course, we seem to have a lot of "enthusiastic donors" (cue more giggling, please). I guess it's a good thing that we're pretty wanted in this area. It certainly makes me feel a little country pride, even if it's for kind of a silly reason. But there could be worse things to export, and at least our stuff is clean.
