Confession: I don’t think Snooki’s pregnancy comments are all that scandalous

Now that Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi has officially confirmed that she's 15 weeks pregnant (and engaged!), the world is abuzz with opinions of how the former party girl will take on motherhood.  And detractors were especially quick to criticize after the publication of her recent US Weekly interview, in which she admits to having consumed alcohol while pregnant. But though I'm really not a Jersey Shore fan, I have to disagree with her critics — I actually find it very refreshing that she's being so open and honest about her pregnancy! In fact, all of the statements that others have found so scandalous have actually made me (dare I say it?) kind of like her.

In the interview, Snooki  and her new fiancée, Jionni LaValle reveal when they found out that they were expecting. It was "right after New Year's," she said. After discovering the news, Snooki confesses that her initial reaction was one of concern. In fact her first thought was, "'s–t, I've been drinking!"

"I was worried," the petite star said. "It was New Year's Eve and we were in Vegas, so I did go crazy."

Of course, everyone and their mother went ballistic after hearing this, calling her everything from an alcoholic to an unfit mother. Actor Zach Braff even took to Twitter to share his thoughts, writing, "Snooki is pregnant. I hope that fetus enjoys Jaegermeister." But honestly, what's the big deal? I'm not condoning drinking while pregnant, but she hadn't yet discovered the news –so why would she not be living her normal lifestyle, which yes, typically included alcohol.  It's not like she popped open a beer right after getting a sonogram.  Plus, how many other mothers have had the same reaction and just never said it out loud? I'm guessing plenty!

The very candid reality star also raised some eyebrows when she revealed that she plans on being drugged while giving birth.  In fact, her exact words were "Natural birth? Eff that__!__". But, news flash people, delivering a baby hurts –which is why millions of women every day opt to get an epidural while doing so. It's a pretty standard birthing option, not a sign of irresponsible mothering.  And if females can decide to have a natural birth without being criticized, then they should also be able to freely choose an epidural if they want one.

I say, good for her. Though there are other Latina stars that I'd rather see pregnant, I think it's awesome that Snooki is sharing things that tons of mothers feel but never have the courage to publically admit. She doesn't care how others percieve her, she's just being honest.  And to all the haters, well I can't believe I'm saying this, but whatever –I'm on Team Snooki!
