The world’s most famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil was up early this morning in Gobbler’s Knob, Pennsylvania, seeing his shadow and predicting 6 more weeks of winter. Whether the weather stays as mild as it has been lately or we’re in for a couple of snowstorms in the next month, there’s a few fun things that you can still be doing with your kids.
As a kid, I grew up in a colder climate before my parents ultimately moved to Florida so I know a thing or two about the different types of winter activities. Whether it’s snowing where you are or you’re one of the lucky few enjoying 80-degree weather in February, there are plenty of fun activities to do with the kids this time of year. One of my favorite things is checking out wintertime activities for Latinos in US National Parks. But what else is there? Plenty, it turns out.
Play in the Snow: One of the easiest ways to have fun after is snows is to go sledding or snow tubing in your backyard, local park or a golf course that has a designated tubing hill. And don’t forget about making snow angels or building snowmen. The key here is to get into the spirit and play alongside the kids.
Indulge in Winter Sports: When it gets cold, there are plenty of ways to stay active with your children while also having a good time. Some favorites include getting a day pass at a nearby kid-friendly resort to have fun with skiing and snowboarding. For particularly icy days, bundle up and go ice skating.
Make the Indoors Fun: If you don’t live in a cold climate (or if it’s just-too-cold to leave the cozy house), there are ways to recreate winter fun. Video games like Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games or Winter Sports: The Ultimate Challenge can make family time into bonding time as you all navigate the virtual slopes.
Head to a Recreation Center: A local YMCA or other rec center will have lots of great activities all season long. Don’t forget about bowling to get out of the cold or even indoor pools. Just because it’s nippy outside doesn’t mean that you can’t have a fun swim with the kids. The best part? It won’t be crazy crowded.
Think Outside the (Ice) Box: Ask your kids how they want to play outside. Let all of your imaginations run wild by building snow castles (like sand castles), take a hike wearing some sturdy snow shoes or even make snow cones by picking fresh fallen, clean snow and sprinkling it with their favorite kool-aid mix.
What is your favorite winter-time activity to do with your kids?
